"Old Romania" – The Photographic Legacy of Kurt Hielscher

Old Romania is a remarkable photographic collection by German photographer Kurt Hielscher, capturing the beauty and everyday life of Romanian people during the interwar period - a time when the country was steeped in tradition, with pristine villages and a vibrant rural life.

In 1931, Hielscher was officially invited by the Romanian government to visit and document the country through his lens. During the years 1931 and 1932, he traveled extensively across Romania, and his affection for the land grew stronger with each passing day. “The more I traveled and lived here,” he said, “the more I loved this country - day by day, week by week.” This deep connection inspired him to take over 5,000 photographs, capturing the country’s natural landscapes, traditional architecture, and daily life with authenticity and artistic finesse.

Out of this vast archive, 304 photographs were carefully selected to be published in the album Rumänien - a visual tribute to Romania’s cultural and natural beauty. The work was quickly recognized for its artistic value and ethnographic significance.

Tragically, in 1944, an Allied bombing raid destroyed Hielscher’s workshop in Poland, wiping out over 40,000 photographs and negatives - almost the entirety of his life’s photographic legacy.

Despite this great loss, Old Romania remains a precious testament to a bygone era, transporting viewers back to the Romania that existed before the seismic shifts of the 20th century. Today, Hielscher’s work is not only a valuable historical document, but also a deeply emotional visual love letter to a country that left an indelible mark on his heart.
