When everyday objects become art: The creative world of Helga Stentzel

Some people photograph the world as it is. Others manage to reinvent it, starting from something as simple as a shirt hanging out to dry. Helga Stentzel is a photographer and visual artist born in Russia and now based in London. Her work is widely recognized for transforming ordinary household objects into poetic, humorous, and unexpectedly imaginative images.

Before establishing herself as an independent visual artist, Stentzel studied graphic design and spent several years working in the advertising industry. This creative background helped her develop a highly distinctive visual language: observing everyday domestic objects and discovering within them hidden shapes, expressions, and characters. Socks become animals, shirts hanging on a clothesline turn into sheep, and towels appear like sleeping faces.

Her creative process is both simple and ingenious. Stentzel carefully studies the most ordinary objects of daily life and reveals their hidden visual potential. With only minimal interventions - such as a fold of fabric, a clothespin, or a hanger - she constructs surreal scenes that seem almost alive. The transformation is subtle, yet powerful enough to spark the viewer’s imagination.

Stentzel’s photographs are typically clean and minimalist in composition, often created using natural light and domestic settings. The images play with a deeply human perceptual phenomenon: our tendency to see faces, animals, or figures in inanimate objects. This psychological effect, commonly known as pareidolia, allows viewers to instantly connect with her work and recognize the playful characters hidden within everyday materials.

Looking at her images reveals a simple but powerful truth: creativity does not necessarily arise from the extraordinary. It often emerges from the ability to see the ordinary in a different way. Stentzel’s photographs therefore do more than depict objects - they reflect how we imagine, interpret, and emotionally engage with the world around us.

Through her blend of observation, imagination, and subtle humor, Helga Stentzel has established a distinctive voice in contemporary visual art and photography. Her seemingly simple images remind us that one of art’s greatest powers lies in transforming the familiar into something surprising, playful, and new.
